What Additives, Binders & Fillers are in Your Supplements?
What's in your supplements? More than 90% of tablets, capsules and gummies contain unnecessary ingredients—additives, binders, and fillers—referred to as “excipients” by the industry. These are extra ingredients that your body does not need such as preservatives, glazes, sweeteners, artificial coloring, deodorizers, and other substances used to shape and hold pills together. Excipients are usually listed under “other” or “inactive” ingredients on a supplement label. Yet, the truth is, excipients contain no nutritional value. Here are some examples of what excipients could be in your supplements:
- Some of the most common excipients used in supplements are magnesium stearate, silicon dioxide, titanium dioxide, starch, calcium carbonate, palmitate, microcrystalline cellulose, stearic acid, simethicone, vegetable gum, talc, and propylene glycol.
- Hydrogenated oils are commonly added to vitamins. They are found in many bakery products as well as highly processed, nutritionally void foods. Partially hydrogenated (and hydrogenated) oils can damage the body in ways that could lead to heart issues, stroke, nervous system problems, difficulties absorbing essential fatty acids, upset blood sugar regulation, and more.
- Artificial colors have been linked to problems from cancer to hyperactivity in children. These colors are added to vitamins to make them more appealing to the consumer. Some of these artificial colors are derived from toxic coal tar. Coal tar is used for a variety of purposes, including for roofing, outdoor sealants, and exterior paints. In dyes, the concern is that it is potentially carcinogenic.
- Magnesium stearate has nothing to do with nutrition, but is simply a flow agent used to keep manufacturing equipment from gumming up when making pills. It is used solely to increase output and cycle times during the manufacturing process. The problem is that magnesium stearate contaminates your vitamins and can hinder dissolution and absorption. It is estimated that 90% of vitamins contain magnesium stearate.
- Titanium Dioxide is a naturally occurring oxide of the element titanium. This widely used mineral is used in vitamins as a pigment, giving pills that bright white color. It is also used for this same reason in many cosmetics. However, research is now showing that exposure to this metal (along with other metals), can lead to problems with the immune function in the body and its carcinogenic properties could be a possible cause of cancer.
